چکیده

This Letter investigates the compressible energy transfer process. We extend a methodology developed originally for incompressible turbulence and use databases from numerical simulations of a weak compressible turbulence based on Eddy-DampedQuasi-Normal-Markovian (EDQNM) closure. In order to analyze the compressible mode directly, the well known Helmholtz decomposition is used. While the compressible component has very little in uence on the solenoidal part, we found that almost all of compressible turbulence energy is received from its solenoidal counterpart. We focus on the most fundamental building block of the energy transfer process, the triadic interactions. This analysis leads us to conclude that, at low turbulent Mach number, the compressible energy transfer process is dominated by a local radiative transfer (absorption) in both inertial and energy containing ranges. This research was partially supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract No. NAS1-19480 while the rst and second authors were in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001.

Effect of Thermal Conductivity and Emissivity of Solid Walls on Time-Dependent Turbulent Conjugate Convective-Radiative Heat Transfer

In the present study, the conjugate turbulent free convection with the thermal surface radiation in a rectangular enclosure bounded by walls with different thermophysical characteristics in the presence of a local heater is numerically studied. The effects of surface emissivity and wall materials on the air flow and the heat transfer characteristics are the main focus of the present investigati...

Computational Study of Radiative and Convective Heat Transfer in a Cylindrical Combustion Chamber

In this paper, the effect of cold air on the fluid flow inside the cylindrical combustion chamber and its wall temperature distribution have been studied computationally, taking into account the effect of radiative heat transfer from hot gases. The results have been compared with the case that radiative heat transfer was neglected. It is observed that the reattachment length increases when incr...

Realistic numerical simulations of solar convection and oscillations in magnetic regions

The goal of this research is to investigate how magnetic field affects the dynamics of granular convection and excitation of solar oscillations by means of realistic numerical simulations. We have used a 3D, compressible, non-linear radiative magnetohydrodynamics code developed at the NASA Ames Research Center. This code takes into account several physical phenomena: compressible fluid flow in ...

Photoelectric heating and [CII] cooling in translucent clouds: results for cloud models based on simulations of compressible MHD turbulence

Far–ultraviolet (FUV) photons expel electrons from interstellar dust grains and the excess kinetic energy of the electrons is converted into gas thermal energy through collisions. This photoelectric heating is believed to be the main heating mechanism in cool HI clouds. The heating rate cannot be directly measured, but it can be estimated through observations of the [CII] line emission, since t...
